Legendary châteaux

  • LEGENDARY CHÂTEAUX

Moselle, a strategic crossing point for troops coming from the East, was the stage for many conflicts, hence the abundance of châteaux and fortifications. Rarely conserved in their original state, often reduced to ruins, the châteaux are a testament to this turbulent past. Among the defence fortresses from the middle ages, some have been converted into fortified houses and manors. Other prestigious buildings, saved by the circumstances of history, stand proud as distinguished witnesses to a period when people in Moselle enjoyed the castle life!

Château de Malbrouck, built in the early 15th century by the powerful Seigneur Arnold VI de Sierck, owes its current name to the famous Duke of Marlborough immortalised in the popular song Marlbrough has left for war. During the War of the Spanish Succession, France was faced with an allied Europe and its war leader John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, who the French nicknamed Malbrouck. In June 1705, the Duke briefly set up his headquarters at the foot of the château.
